NomadMania is proud to announce an unforgettable 9 day tour (with an optional 4 day add-on to DR Congo) through the heart of East Africa hosted by one of our Envoys – Obed Temba, which will take place from January 19 to January 27. This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the colourful local cultures and explore the incredible natural wonders of three East African nations. Maximum group size is 13 people.
During the first part of the trip we are going to visit 5 NomadMania regions and 2 DARE places.
Here is the itinerary
Day 1: Arrival to Kigoma (from Dar es Salaam)
Morning departure for Kigoma. After transferring to the hotel and checking in, relax before heading out to explore Ujiji in the afternoon.
The visit includes the famous Livingstone Memorial, where explorer David Livingstone and journalist Henry Morton Stanley met in 1871. The tour also features a trip to Ujiji Market, offering a vibrant experience of local culture and the opportunity to shop for handicrafts, souvenirs, and fresh produce.
Day 2: Visit Gombe National Park
The day begins with an early morning departure to Gombe National Park, where travellers will trek through the forest to observe chimpanzees and learn about their behavior. In the afternoon, the exploration continues on foot with a guide, watching for wildlife like red colobus monkeys, baboons, bushbucks, and diverse bird species.
A visit to the Jane Goodall Research Center follows, providing insights into Dr. Goodall’s pioneering work and ongoing conservation efforts. The day concludes with a return to the hotel in Kigoma for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Cross from Tanzania to Burundi visit Lac Nyanza
The day starts with an early departure from your accommodation in Kigoma, Tanzania. From there, proceed to the Kigoma port to cross the border into Burundi. After crossing, drive for about two hours to reach Lac Nyanza in Burundi. Here, you’ll visit a fishermen’s village to learn about their daily life and fishing traditions. Later, take a boat cruise on the lake to view the village from a different perspective and enjoy the serene beauty of the water.
Day 4: Makamba & Agasimbo Dance
Travel to Makamba, a picturesque town known for its vibrant culture and rich history. Immerse yourself in the traditional Agasimbo Dance, a regional dance that is a significant part of Burundian cultural diversity. Located in the Buragane natural region, Makamba offers a unique glimpse into the local culture with its colorful performances and energetic music that will leave you mesmerized.
Day 5: Batwa and Babwibwi communities
Begin your exploration by diving deeper into the local communities, starting with a visit to the Batwa community, also known as pygmies or the first settlers of the region. Learn about their unique way of life, cultural traditions, and the challenges they face in preserving their heritage in a rapidly changing world. Continue your cultural immersion with a visit to the Babwibwi or Tchaka descendants in the northeast of Burundi, where you can gain insight into another indigenous community’s lifestyle and customs.
Day 6: Ruvubu Bee keepers and fishermen
Today, visit the Ruvubu beekeepers and fishermen communities in Ruvubu National Park. Learn about their crucial role in protecting and preserving the park ecosystem through sustainable practices. Witness their dedication and passion for their craft and the environment as they share their knowledge and experiences. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the park and reflect on the harmonious relationship between the local communities and the natural world.
Day 7: Cross to Tanzania through Kobero and cross into Rwanda
In the morning, prepare to cross the border into Tanzania via Kobero, ensuring you have all necessary travel documents. Upon entering Tanzania, drive for approximately an hour to reach the Rusumo border and cross into Rwanda. Continue your journey to Akagera National Park, where you’ll check into your accommodation. Spend the evening enjoying the natural beauty of the park before your safari adventure the next day.
Day 8: Akagera National Park Safari
Wake up early to embark on a thrilling morning game drive through Akagera National Park, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park before taking a tranquil boat tour on Lake Ihema, offering a unique perspective of the park’s ecosystem with close views of hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species. In the evening, drive to Kigali. Hotel and B&B In Kigali included.

Day 9: Free day in Kigali (Jan 27)
Rest day for those who continue with the add-on below and departure if the tour is finished here. Hotel and B&B is included for the night for those continuing.
Optional Extension (Jan 28-31)
This part of the trip covers an additional 2 NomadMania regions and 2 DARE places, as well as a World Heritage Site.
Day 10: Depart from Kigali To Bukavu
Embark on a full-day excursion from Kigali to Cyangungu, the gateway to Bukavu. Depart in the morning and arrive in Cyangungu in time to cross the border to Bukavu, as the Rwanda-DRC border closes at 3 pm. Upon arrival in Bukavu, check into your hotel and rest after the long journey. In the evening, explore the surroundings or relax at your leisure. We offer dual hotel options in Bukavu depending on your budget.
Day 11: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park
Today is the highlight of your trip as you embark on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. After an early breakfast, you’ll be led through dense forests in search of the endangered eastern lowland gorillas. The trek can be challenging, but encountering these majestic primates in their natural habitat is unforgettable. Observe the gorillas from a safe distance, witnessing their playful antics and social interactions. After gorilla trekking, explore Bukavu town before heading to your hotel.
Day 12: Cross back to Cyangugu and catch a boat to Nkombo Island
Cross back to Cyangugu and catch a boat to Nkombo Island. Enjoy stunning views and unique experiences as you explore this beautiful region by both land and water. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the island and participate in a cultural exchange with locals, learning about traditional dance, music, and crafts. Visit the small fishing villages on the island and interact with the friendly locals. Watch the sunset over Lake Kivu from the island, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Congo Nile Trail.
Day 13: Visit Iwawa Island and return to Kigali
After breakfast, take a boat ride to Iwawa Island (this is subject to confirmation by the local authorities). Upon arrival, enjoy a guided tour and visit the Iwawa Rehabilitation and Vocational Skills Development Centre to interact with students and learn about their training programs. Experience the serene surroundings of Iwawa Island, explore the island, and relax on the beaches. Afterward, return to Kigali for your departure flight. Note: If we cannot get to Iwawa, alternative activities will be arranged.
