NomadMania is happy to announce that, following a long pause and many years with 1301 regions, we are slowly commencing the process of increasing our regional count. We ourselves don’t know how many regions will be added at this point, as this will partially depend on you. Unlike other times when this was done in one moment, this time the process will last a few months, with a key emphasis on always pointing out why we deem changes necessary or not.
We will be using the remaining months of 2025 to slowly explain the reasoning, criteria and ramifications of a change of regions, while also getting the community involved in the decision-making. We expect the start of the actual process of additions to be in early 2026 and this should be completed by the summer of 2026.
No existing regions will be deleted during this process.
Why are we adding new regions?
Here are some reasons:
- It is a chance to review our divisions and correct some glaring mistakes and injustices in how regions are allocated based on our optimal (more on the optimal and its weightings in the next weeks);
- It is a chance to allow the NomadMania community – you – to also partially participate in the decision-making, especially in instances where countries could benefit from an additional region but could also stand as they currently are without it being a ‘mistake’;
- It is a chance to be in sync with constant dynamic factors, such as increasing populations, the growth of massive cities, boosted international tourism and ever-changing political developments;
- It is a chance to add new, essential criteria into our assessment of how countries should be divided;
- It is an opportunity to promote discussion and consideration of regional divisions for the community to comprehend what a truly complex process this is;
- More regions mean more choice, so more opportunities to travel and things to see!
- It is an opportunity to up the bar for everyone: when NomadMania first launched its regional divisions, not even one traveller had been to more than 1,000 NomadMania regions, let alone 1,200. Now, there are 30 travellers who claim more than 1,000 regions, with 8 of them above the 1,200 mark;
So, is your country going to have more regions?
You will be finding out gradually over the next few months.
Here is a timeline of how we expect to proceed in the next weeks:
Throughout November – Explanation of the ‘optimal’, which forms the basis for our regional divisions, and of its criteria; explanation of the decision of ‘weighting’ of the criteria of the optimal.
December – Overview of the Megaregions that will NOT see any changes and why; overview of some of the countries that will not see any changes to their allocation of regions (and why).
January and February: Initiation of the changes for those regions where the optimal score clearly requires additional regions.
March-April: Community voting for possible additional changes.
May-June: Conclusion of the process with presentation of voting results and implementation of final changes.
So, welcome on a long journey of re-considering the world – every single country will be mentioned in the process. Bon voyage!
