Hello Nomads, My name is William Tetteh Obinyah, and I live in Tema, Ghana. For a few years I used to be part of the NomadMania internal team mainly being responsible for general admin support as the associate. Now I work as a tour guide and fixer. You can find me among other fixers in the dedicated page of the NomadMania website here.
As someone with a deep love for travel and discovery, I truly enjoy showing visitors around Ghana — sharing its culture, history, and everyday life in a way that feels simple, genuine, and authentic. Recently, Ghana gained its 4th NomadMania region — Volta — as part of the Regional Review Project. I’m excited to share my perspective and shed some light on this fascinating part of my country.
With Harry Mitsidis
It covers the lush Volta Region (Ho–Hohoe), the peaceful Oti Region (Dambai), the historic Northern Region (Yendi), the cultural North East Region (Nalerigu), and the vibrant Upper East Region (Bawku).
Each place has its own story, shaped by geography, history, and tradition. I think this is a very good initiative by NomadMania, as the creation of these new regions makes travel more efficient for explorers. What makes this 4th Ghana region especially unique is how it captures the untapped beauty of the Volta and Oti areas and blends it with the rich cultural diversity and traditions of northern Ghana.
NomadMania also highlights the far North East area, particularly Bawku, which is a DARE place.
Volta Region: Nature’s Playground
Let me share with you the untapped nature’s playground of the Volta Region. If you love waterfalls, mountains, and a bit of wildlife, this region is a must-visit.The majestic Wli Waterfalls, the tallest in West Africa at over 260 feet, is a true highlight. A 40-minute hike through the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary brings you face to face with its roaring beauty.
Travelers visit regularly to climb the mountain, challenge themselves, and enjoy the breathtaking views from the summit. There are other interesting places to explore, including the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, Tagbo Falls, and the Amedzofe Canopy Walkway, all of which attract visitors throughout the year.
All these amazing places are within a 4–5 hour drive from Accra. It is easy to make a day trip there if you are in Accra.
Oti Region: Relax & Explore
The Oti Region is where you can slow down and soak in authentic Ghanaian life. Its capital, Dambai, sits along the scenic Oti River, offering calm views and fresh air. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the warm hospitality of the local communities.
This region offers a peaceful escape from the chaos of Accra and provides truly memorable experiences. The Hanging Village of Shiare is one of the most unique settlements in Ghana, where visitors can experience its history and the daily life of the people.
Exploring Kyabobo National Park for hiking and wildlife viewing is one of the highlights of this beautiful region. It is also home to Ghana’s second-highest peak, Mount Dzebobo. Travelers can also witness the beauty of Lake Volta, which offers stunning scenery and diverse wildlife. These experiences are best enjoyed on a full-day tour. Visitors can also find a range of hotels and guest houses for accommodation in the region.
Northern Region: History & Culture
NomadMania also highlights part of the Northern Region (Yendi), which is known for its rich history and culture. If you are a food lover, you will enjoy some of the local cuisine in this region. For me, I am a big fan of Waakye, a simple but delicious combination of rice and beans, often served with spicy chili sauce.
The Ya-Na Palace, the traditional residence of the King of Dagbon, is a place you should visit when in this region. The historic graves at Adibo — often seen as part of the deeper historical side of the NomadMania experience mark the resting place of German colonialists who were defeated by the people of Dagbon in a battle in 1896.
You can also experience traditional cloth weaving, including Gonja weaving. The Fugu (Batakari), commonly worn in this region, has even gained global attention, partly due to its appearance during official state events abroad. The Northern Region is a special place to visit. Although the weather can be challenging at times, it offers a rewarding experience for anyone interested in culture and history.
North East Region: History & Festivals
The capital of Ghana’s North East Region, Nalerigu, is full of culture and history. Seeing the ancient NaJeringa Defence Wall and exploring the scenic Doves Caves of Nalerigu are among the highlights of visiting this region.
This area also offers off-road travel experiences. The climate can be challenging, so visitors should stay well hydrated at all times. A visit to the culturally important NaYiri Palace, home of the Mamprusi ruler, is also a great way to understand the traditions of the local people.
If your timing is right, you can catch the vibrant Damba Festival a true taste of local traditions. Nalerigu perfectly blends historical sites, natural beauty, and cultural experiences.
Upper East Region: Culture & Adventure
With all the amazing experiences available in the northern part of Ghana, NomadMania also highlights Bawku, which, for me, is one of the most intense places to visit as a traveler. Bawku sits near the borders of Burkina Faso and Togo. Known for its vibrant culture, this DARE place also has a complex history due to the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area.
For well-informed travelers, it offers a unique glimpse into Ghana’s living traditions. If you are lucky and invited, you may witness a traditional marriage ceremony in this region, particularly among the Kusasi people. In some cases, customary marriage traditions involve the presentation of livestock as part of the bride price.
Food culture in this part of Ghana is also quite unique and not for every visitor. In some communities, dog meat is traditionally consumed, and you may come across it in local markets, especially on market days. It is part of the local culinary practices and may surprise some travelers.
Bawku Market is the main highlight for visitors, especially on market days when it becomes very active with trade and social life.
Why Visit?
I think NomadMania did well in the creation of this new region, offering travelers a different experience through Ghana’s eastern corridor. It captures mountain peaks, animal sanctuaries, wildlife, and breathtaking waterfalls. It brings together cultural diversity, history, and adventure, showcasing some of the very best that Ghana has to offer.
Travelers get an all-in-one experience in this region. With a week of well-planned travel, one can fully enjoy the adventure this 4th NomadMania region offers. I am impressed by this regional separation and encourage readers to make it a must-visit destination, even if they have already explored the other regions.
Cheers and happy travels 🙂 I hope you enjoyed reading this and learnt something new about Ghana.
