Batch 3 – Regional Changes – European Countries

03 March, 2026 | Blog, Regions Review

As we continue progressing with the regional changes process, we are now approaching Europe. The updates below are based on our Roadmap and the NomadMania Optimal Score methodology.

European countries where ONE NEW region is being added: Austria – Bulgaria – Croatia – Czechia – Hungary – Portugal – Sweden.

Countries with an improved internal division: Poland and Romania.

We are also still awaiting local input regarding Switzerland and The Netherlands, where one additional region is planned.

Let’s get down to details!

Austria

A new region, Greater Vienna, has been carved out of the former region Austria – Eastern (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland).

Greater Vienna automatically inherits the existing visited point. As a result, the remaining region is effectively Austria – East – Lower Austria and Burgenland (including Sankt Pölten and Wiener Neustadt), comprising the parts of Lower Austria outside Greater Vienna together with Burgenland.

As a result we have Greater Vienna plus four regions each containing two Austrian states:

  • Austria – East – Lower Austria and Burgenland (Sankt Pölten, Wiener Neustadt)
  • Austria – South – Carinthia and Styria (Graz, Klagenfurt)
  • Austria – North – Salzburg and Upper Austria (Salzburg, Linz)
  • Austria – West – Tyrol and Vorarlberg (Innsbruck, Bregenz)

Bulgaria

That’s an interesting one where we mainly followed a geographical approach.

Old NM Regions (3) New NM Regions (4)
  1. Bulgaria – North
  2. Bulgaria – South
  3. Bulgaria – Black Sea Coast
  1. Bulgaria – West (Sofia, Blagoevgrad, Bansko)
  2. Bulgaria – South – Rhodopes and Northern Thrace
  3. Bulgaria – North – Danubian Plain and Dobruja
  4. Bulgaria – East – Black Sea Coast (Burgas, Varna)

Croatia

This case was already announced at the very beginning of the Regional Review Project in the Guide to Regions Review.

The new region is Kvarner which occupies the central part of the Adriatic coast between Istria and Dalmatia.

Czechia

The case with Czechia is pretty straightforward.

The former NomadMania region Czechia – Central, South, West is cut in Southern Bohemia and Central Bohemia including Prague. The latter one inherits a point.

Hungary

Hungary receives a slight change too.

Old NM Regions (3) New NM Regions (4)
  1. Hungary – Central and North
  2. Hungary – Great Plains
  3. Hungary – Transdanubia
  1. Hungary – Central – Budapest and Pest County
  2. Hungary – Northern (Miskolc, Eger)
  3. Hungary – Great Plains (Szeged, Debrecen)
  4. Hungary – Transdanubia

Hungary – Central – Budapest and Pest County become a new region inheriting a point from the former Hungary – Central and North.

Szolnok county is moved to Great Plains where it belongs culturally and geographically. Transdanubia remains unchanged.

Portugal

A new region is created Portugal – Lisbon and Vale do Tejo which inherits a point from the former Portugal – Central.

Sweden

Here is a rather dramatic change suggested by our NomadMania members from Sweden.

Old NM Regions (5) New NM Regions (6)
  1. Sweden – Svealand (Stockholm, Örebro, Karlstad)
  2. Sweden – Götaland West, Halland, Skane
  3. Sweden – Götaland East
  4. Sweden – Norrland East and Jämtland
  5. Sweden – Norrland – Lapland
    *essential – Sweden – Gotland
  1. Sweden – Stockholm and Mälardalen
  2. Sweden – Gothenburg and the South West
  3. Sweden – Skåne and South
  4. Sweden – Bergslagen
  5. Sweden – Norrland Coastal
  6. Sweden – Norrland Inland
    *essential – Sweden – Gotland

Switzerland and The Netherlands

We are currently waiting for an extra input from the local community regarding how to add a new region in both countries.

Poland

There is a small fix in two regions in Southeastern part of the country which better reflects the local culture and a travellers perspective.

Before After

Świętokrzyskie goes with Lesser Poland and Subcarpathia with Lublin.

Romania

Finally Romania receives the most dramatic change to fit its traditional and cultural division.

Old NM Regions (5) New NM Regions (5)
  1. Romania – South
  2. Romania – Southeast
  3. Romania – Northeast
  4. Romania – Centre
  5. Romania – Southwest
  6. Romania – Northwest
  1. Romania – Muntenia (Bucharest, Pitești, Călăraşi)
  2. Romania – Oltenia (Craiova, Drobeta-Turnu Severin)
  3. Romania – Dobrogea (Constanţa, Galaţi, Tulcea)
  4. Romania – Moldova and Bukovina (Iaşi, Suceava)
  5. Romania – Transilvania and Maramures (Cluj-Napoca)
  6. Romania – Banat and Crisana (Timişoara, Oradea)

As always, we highly value your feedback — especially from those with strong local knowledge.
