In Kharkiv region, the scars of occupation are starkly evident, especially in ravaged neighbourhoods like Saltivka. Yet, amidst the devastation, the resilient spirit of its citizens prevails, evident in its relentless efforts to rebuild and rejuvenate.
Kyiv, the nation’s capital, stands firm, having weathered significant threats. Its nearby towns, like Bucha and Irpin, narrate tales of sacrifice and resistance. Participants will gain insights into the efforts taken to defend the city and the cost of its survival.
Lviv in the West, distant from direct conflict, plays a pivotal role. Having sheltered countless refugees, its streets buzz with activity, masking its significant role as a logistical backbone for the nation, especially given its proximity to the European Union.

Kharkiv groups meets in Przemysl, a border town in Poland, early morning and travels to Ukraine. After a short stop in Lviv the group takes an overnight train to Eastern Ukraine. Full details are to be sent to registered participants.
This schedule might be subject to a minor change. All group members will be accommodated in 4 pax. comfortable compartments.
Day 2 (Oct 16) Liberated areas of Eastern Ukraine
Upon arrival to Kharkiv, we shall have breakfast and a short briefing from a local representative. Then we’ll join one of the Kharkiv NGOs on their humanitarian missions into the surrounding area which stayed under the Russian occupation for around six months and is still in a bad state with lots of damage.
After visiting the deoccupied territories, we’ll come back to Kharkiv for a night in a comfortable hotel.
Day 3 (Oct 17) Kharkiv – the hero city
This entire full day is dedicated to Kharkiv, the second largest city of Ukraine with a prewar population over 1,5 million residents. The frontline and active fighting was concentrated along the outskirts of the city for several months.
Kharkiv downtown is badly damaged. However, the local residents are doing their best to keep the city running, showing remarkable resilience.
During this day we’ll also visit Saltivka, once the largest residential neighbourhood in Ukraine with a prewar population of around 400,000 people. Unfortunately not a single building remained untouched by war in North Saltivka, the area where local residents are starting to return slowly and bringing back some life.
Afterwards we’ll take the evening fast train to Kyiv with the night in Ukraine’s capital. Expected schedule Kharkiv – Kyiv (17:10-22:07).
Day 4 (Oct 18) Kyiv – the heart of Ukraine
Founded in the 5th century, Kyiv is the cradle of East Slavic civilisation. The city is a remarkable metropolis which is standing strong during its toughest times in recent history.
This day will be mostly focused on Kyiv’s landmarks and understanding the history of Ukraine. We’ll also try to arrange a meeting with local authorities and community leaders. The second night in Kyiv will be spent in the same hotel.
Day 5 (Oct 19) Liberated areas around Kyiv
Everyone has now heard of Bucha, Irpin, Borodyanka. These are the towns west of Kyiv where the initial Russian invasion was stopped in March 2022. Unfortunately these (and not only) settlements suffered greatly.
At the same time the reconstruction is going on at full speed and some previously destroyed placed are not recognisable anymore.
There is still a lot of work ahead. By visiting Bucha, Irpin and Borodyanka we’d like to explain how the initial Russian invasion was heading towards the capital, what made it possible to prevent the fall of the Ukrainian capital and to pay a tribute to those who gave up their lives for it.
This entire day will be by bus and will eventually be finished in Lviv late evening the same day. All participants will check into the hotel in Lviv for three nights.
Day 6 (Oct 20)
NomadMania Travel Awards Gala in LVIV
For the first time ever in history the NomadMania Travel Awards Event is happening live in Lviv where the biggest travellers of 2023 will be praised for their recent travel achievements.
This event will be a combination of a conference and a gala event, which will serve as a resume of everything we’ve experienced in Ukraine during the week. But the gala is not just about the awards. The underground bunker venue has its surprises.

Day 7 (Oct 21) Lviv – the main western city
Lviv is the largest city of Western Ukraine. Being located far from the frontline, it plays a crucial role as the main logistical hub of the country. For example, during the initial months of the full-scale war, over 50,000 refugees and internally displaced people transited through the city.
Because of its position Lviv is considered somewhat a safe haven. Life on the streets might look somehow normal like nothing is happening. Thus many events and high profile meetings take place in Lviv due to its strategic position only 1 hour drive away from the EU and NATO border.
During this day we’ll focus on multiple landmarks of Lviv which mirror a turbulent history spanning over 750 years.
Day 8 (Oct 22) Departure from Lviv
Get in / Get out
The nearest airports in Poland are: Rzeszow, Krakow, Lublin, Warsaw.
It is also possible to travel by bus or cross the border on foot, though that is less comfortable. Detailed schedules will be provided closer to the date of the event.
Please allocate a full day to travel between any Polish city and Lviv.
Przemysl is the first meeting point regardless of your package. Transportation to Lviv will be provided.
- The Kharkiv group will start from Lviv with the overnight train to the East
- The Kyiv participants can go to Kyiv directly on their own or join the bus heading from Lviv
Safety
Currently Ukraine is at full scale war. However, the situation beyond the frontline is relatively stable. Street crime is virtually nonexistent due to martial law and nationwide security measures. The sirens warn about possible air attacks.
We’ll take the highest precaution levels in order to keep everyone safe as much as possible. However, the situation can change rapidly. We’ll keep an eye on the updates and will inform you about everything.

NomadMania chose Ukraine to spotlight its rich culture and resilient spirit. By hosting our Travel Awards there, we aim to emphasize Ukraine’s beauty and significance in the face of recent challenges. It’s our way of standing beside a country with much to offer global explorers.
How will this tour spotlight Ukraine's potential as a global travel destination?
NomadMania’s tour immersively showcases Ukraine, from liberated areas near Kharkiv to the resilient heart of Kyiv. By highlighting its history, beauty, and spirit, we aim to strengthen international ties and position Ukraine as a top global travel destination. It’s our way of celebrating and supporting Ukraine’s untapped potential.
Why was an underground bunker in Lviv selected as the backdrop for the NomadMania awards gala?
The underground bunker in Lviv is a unique and symbolic venue, reflecting Ukraine’s resilience and history amidst ongoing challenges. It ensures utmost safety for attendees, emphasizing protection and the Ukrainian people’s powerful spirit.
How does Kyiv's safety profile compare with other major Ukrainian cities?
As the capital, Kyiv is a strategically significant target, but it boasts an advanced protection system, intercepting most potential threats. While it might experience more frequent attacks, the city’s defences minimize casualties. Therefore, Kyiv’s safety measures are robust, possibly more so than many other cities in Ukraine.
Given Kharkiv's proximity to the Russian border, what can attendees expect regarding safety and experiences?
Kharkiv, close to the Russian border, has faced significant challenges and damage, especially in areas like Saltivka. However, the city is on a path to recovery, with residents showing commendable resilience. While participants will witness the impact of the war, they’ll also experience the ongoing recovery efforts, emphasizing the city’s spirit and determination.
What safety measures are in place for tour participants?
Although Ukraine leaves through the war, areas beyond the frontline are relatively stable. Street crime is almost nonexistent due to martial law and nationwide security measures. Sirens provide warnings about potential air attacks. The tour is designed to prioritize safety, and attendees will only visit areas deemed secure. NomadMania will also update participants on any situational changes to ensure everyone’s well-being throughout the journey.
Considering flight restrictions, which entry points into Ukraine are recommended?
With Ukrainian airports closed, the most recommended route is entering from Poland. Several daily trains from Przemysl to Lviv offer a convenient travel option. While there are nearby airports in Poland, such as Rzeszow, Krakow, Lublin, and Warsaw, travellers can opt for buses from there, though these might be less comfortable options. For smooth travel, allocating a whole day for transit between any major Polish city and Lviv is advisable.
Does the tour itinerary navigate through any potential risk areas?
While absolute safety is challenging in the current circumstances, we’ve gone to great lengths to ensure the well-being of our participants. Our Ukraine tour is meticulously planned, and we consciously avoid unsafe areas. NomadMania prioritizes the safety and enriching experience of its community above all else.
Who is eligible to attend the award ceremony in Lviv, and is there an attendance limit?
The NomadMania event in Lviv welcomes all travel enthusiasts, regardless of their travel background. From seasoned globe-trotters who’ve journeyed through every country to those just beginning their exploration journey, the event aims to foster a warm community spirit. Given our intimate group size for Kharkiv and the larger assembly for Kyiv, there’s an attendance limit for each segment. To ensure your spot, we urge attendees to register in advance at https://nomadmania.com/ukraine2023.
