Best Travel Book 2025

The book that takes readers on new adventures, sparking the love for travel with every page

"Slow Trains to Istanbul: ...And Back: A 4,570-Mile Adventure on 55 Rides"

"Slow Trains to Istanbul: ...And Back: A 4,570-Mile Adventure on 55 Rides"

by Tom Chesshyre 🇬🇧

Tom is the author of twelve travel books. He has travelled 40,000 miles around the world for his train books; among which for Slow Trains Around Spain: A 3,000-Mile Adventure on 52 Rides. His book writing has also taken him across North Africa after the Arab Spring, round the “dark side” of the Maldives on cargo ships, along the length of the River Thames and on a journey through “unsung Britain” (in To Hull and Back). He worked on the travel desk of The Times for 21 years and is now freelance, contributing to The Critic and New European magazines. Slow Trains to Istanbul can be seen as the ideal combination of a travel ‘geek’ train ride and a keen observation of the history and culture of the many places visited written with the author’s characteristic wit and perceptiveness.

"The Impossible Journey: An Incredible Voyage Through Every Country in the World Without Flying"

"The Impossible Journey: An Incredible Voyage Through Every Country in the World Without Flying"

by Thor Pedersen 🇩🇰

Thor is a Danish adventurer, author, speaker, husband, and father – the only person in history to visit every country in the world entirely without flying. From 2013 to 2023, he travelled across every nation by land and sea in a continuous journey that redefined the meaning of modern exploration. Born in Denmark and partly raised in North America, Thor relied on his background in shipping and logistics to navigate immense challenges. His book, The Impossible Journey, offers a raw and introspective look at ambition, humanity, and adventure—an unconventional travel memoir that explores both the road and the people along it. Having served as a goodwill ambassador for the Red Cross during his expedition, Thor continues to inspire others through powerful stories of perseverance, human connection, and the courage to keep moving forward.

"One Way Ticket To Everywhere"

"One Way Ticket To Everywhere"

by Anna-Katri Räihä 🇫🇮

Anna-Katri is an environmental consultant, entrepreneur, and author. Her book, One-Way Ticket to Everywhere – Solo Traveler’s Handbook, is a powerful and inspiring story of a solo female traveller who became the first Finnish woman to visit every country in the world. Through her remarkable journey, she shares not only captivating stories and unforgettable encounters but also the deeper meaning of exploring the world alone — with awareness, courage, and compassion. The book is both a personal memoir and a conscious travel guide, inviting readers to see the world and themselves in a more meaningful way and inspiring them to go beyond simply visiting each country. With honesty and reflection, the author reveals what it means to belong everywhere and nowhere, to find strength in solitude, and to embrace the world with open eyes and heart. One-Way Ticket to Everywhere celebrates freedom, curiosity, and the transformative power of solo travel.

Ankitha saves every penny, plans for months. Juggles spreadsheets and time zones with her full time job. Carries a passport that makes borders feel like walls. Yet Anki has stood in 117 countries, including places people warned her against. Why would you go there? What’s left but ruins? Her book answers simply: Why Not? As a woman from India, she travels to understand – herself, the world, the stories buried in those “ruins.” Every visa rejection taught patience. Every stranger’s kindness reshaped what she thought she knew. Travel became less about ticking boxes and more about unlearning fear, embracing vulnerability, shedding assumptions, growing beyond the person she was yesterday. She doesn’t have unlimited funds or time. She has something better: the stubborn belief that the world belongs to her too, and curiosity that won’t quiet down.

"It's All in the State of Mind"

"It's All in the State of Mind"

by Odette Ricasa 🇵🇭 🇺🇸

Odette was the first Filipina to reach 193 and is considered a legend in the travel community. A prolific, dedicated writer of numerous travel books, her latest publication It’s All in the State of Mind is in many ways a celebration of travel as a whole and a summary of her life, zig-zagging through past and present as a compilation of a life well lived. Much of it is composed of poems and thoughts, as well as poignant travel descriptions, as much as it is often dedicated to other travellers and community moments, a reflection of the magnanimity and generosity of its author. With locations as unusual and diverse as Chad and the Austral islands being proof of a life well-travelled, this touching book is a worthy reflection of the adventures of a community icon who clearly has the travel state of mind.

NomadMania Awards 2023

Most Intrepid Traveller 2025

A traveller whose travels in the last year have required considerable courage, risk-taking and craziness

You voted for:

Born in Sarajevo and experiencing the siege during her teenage years, Aida came to the United States as a refugee, determined to rebuild her life from the ashes of war. She graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in aerospace engineering and began a career as a rocket scientist – proof that no dream is unreachable. Later, she founded her own tax company, working only three months a year to spend the other nine exploring the world. Since 2007, she has travelled the globe and prefers travelling solo – renting cars and driving through 67 countries, guided by curiosity, not comfort. As a dive master, she’s explored the warm, crystal-clear waters of 49 countries, from the Caribbean to the South Pacific. To date, she has journeyed through 210 countries and territories, now missing only seven to visit every UN nation. Her life is a testament to resilience, freedom, and fearless exploration—the true spirit of being intrepid.
Intrepid Greek filmmaker and YouTuber Timmy explores the world’s hardest places to reach, but beyond being obviously daring, it is his professional documentation of unlikely places that make his endeavours not just personal but also of global value. Having spent lots of time in darker corners of the Americas, from Haiti’s gang zones and the Darien Gap jungle to Brazil’s favelas, he shares stories of struggle and resilience that most media ignore or don’t dare to report on. He was one of the first Westerners to cross the impenetrable Darien Gap on foot and to film inside El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison. He was also one of the first to enter Syria and its notorious prisons following the regime change there. Through raw storytelling and respect for locals, Timmy turns danger into human connection — inspiring millions to see the world without fear.
Alvaro is the youngest person to visit every country twice, including completing the Pyongyang 2025 Marathon and visiting Sudan in May 2025, finishing in Malta in June. Recognized as the biggest traveller under 37, he has visited over 910 NomadMania regions. He has travelled to Afghanistan eight times (totaling 100 days), Yemen five times, and completed the Dakar to Abidjan overland route five times, leading 26 travel groups. He reached Timbuktu by boat and mainland Yemen in 2018. He is the founder of Wander Expeditions, which has organized 180 group trips in more than 110 countries over five years, pushing the limits of group travel through overland expeditions in West and Central Africa and inventive itineraries across the Pacific and Caribbean. He welcomes over 600 travellers annually, some now UN Masters, and has personally led 100 expeditions.
At 81, Luisa proves that adventure truly has no age limit. After completing visits to all 193 UN countries in 2023, instead of resting, she kept exploring corners she hadn’t yet visited — from Pakistan, Russia, Kenya, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Austria, Switzerland, Chad’s remote Ennedi Desert, where she camped in the rugged terrain, and Algeria. Her travels continued through India, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan along the legendary Pamir Highway, then to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Japan, South Korea, and Turkey — each destination adding new stories to her remarkable journey. She reconnected with fellow explorers through all major travel clubs who are a close part of her heart. In April 2025, Luisa was honoured by the President of the Philippines, through the Filipino World Travellers, for her fearless spirit and lifelong passion for discovering the world without limits.

From the summit of Everest to the frozen expanse of the South Pole, Jason embodies the spirit of intrepid exploration. Having recently completed a grueling 45-day expedition to summit Mount Everest, he has become one of the very few travellers to have conquered the 7 Summits, standing atop the highest peak on each continent. With 179 UN countries explored and counting, his travels span from remote African villages to Antarctic ice fields, always with cameras in hand to document the extraordinary and inspire others to go beyond their comfort zone. Whether scaling treacherous mountain faces at extreme altitude or navigating the logistical challenges of reaching Earth’s most remote corners, Jason combines a positive attitude and the ability to withstand physical challenges with a photographer’s eye for capturing the world’s most challenging destinations.

NomadMania Awards 2023

Most Purposeful Traveller 2025

The one whose efforts to create community, help local communities and, in general, travel with a purpose

You voted for:

As a traveller, Anibal seeks more than movement; he seeks meaning. His journeys focus on documenting and sharing the voices of minority cultures, creating bridges of understanding between worlds that rarely meet. With a background in computer engineering and systems biology, he applies his researcher’s curiosity to human diversity, exploring how tradition, identity, and resilience shape communities across the globe. Through his ethnographic travel agency, he organizes expeditions that generate local income that ensures local sustainability, respecting and preserving cultural heritage while connecting travellers to the people behind the landscapes. His photography and storytelling aim to foster empathy and respect, reminding audiences that cultural diversity is not an obstacle but a treasure. For him, travel is a form of dialogue, and every encounter is an opportunity to build community and purpose.

Gianluca is a social scientist researching how human societies worldwide adapt and respond to globalisation and climate change. Since 2010, he has practised low-carbon travel to reduce his carbon footprint, travelling by train and ship from Europe to the Far East and South America. After conducting fieldwork research on indigenous communities’ adaptation to climate change in the Solomon Islands, he refused his employer’s order to return by aeroplane in 2023, thus becoming the first employee fired for climate-related conscientious objection. He completed the 28,000km journey without flying in 72 days, as documented in the award-winning film “The Researcher” and a book. After travelling in third class and being hosted by people from the “global periphery”, Gianluca has learned that he will always find somebody looking after him as a brother and that every place in the world is his home.
Most of Barry’s travels have been driven by purpose. In 2010, a life-changing journey to Mali inspired him to found Caravan to Class, bringing education to Timbuktu’s children through the construction and support of eighteen schools. After losing his wife Jackie in Africa in 2017, travel became his path to healing and renewed purpose. In her honor, he created the Bourse Jackie programs, empowering young West African women through university scholarships, English immersion, and leadership development based in Mali, Ghana, and Burkina Faso. As he awaits the chance to visit his final 193rd country, North Korea, he carries the stories of the scholars with him—reminders that travel’s greatest reward is not discovery, but contribution. From Timbuktu to Togo, each journey reinforces his belief that purposeful travel can build bridges of understanding, opportunity, and hope across the shared world.

Mario is an explorer and sustainability advocate dedicated to using human-powered travel to reconnect people with the planet. From walking across Africa from Cape Town to Cairo to kayaking, cycling, and driving electric vehicles across continents, his expeditions demonstrate that meaningful adventure can be achieved without harming the Earth. Along the way, he has built bridges across cultures, amplifying local voices and sharing stories that inspire collective responsibility and environmental stewardship. As an Explorer-in-Residence with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, his mission is to redefine exploration as a force for good — one that values empathy over ego and sustainability over speed. He believes the most purposeful journeys don’t just change landscapes; they change perspectives and deepen our connection to the world we share.

Kach is a woman who transformed travel into purpose. In 2025, she made history as the first woman from the Global South to visit all 193 UN countries solely on a Philippine passport—a journey driven not by privilege, but by her perseverance and vision. This makes her one of very few women to visit every country solely on a Low Passport Index passport. Through her platforms FilipinoPassport.com and Two Monkeys Travel, she champions accessible global mobility, empowering Filipinos to explore the world despite visa barriers. Living between Palawan, Dubai, and Montenegro, she demonstrates that travel can be a force for change, combining education, empowerment, and opportunity. Recognized by TIME, Forbes, and the BBC, Kach travels not just to see the world, but to open it for others—one Filipino dreamer at a time.
Randy is a global TV and radio personality, heard on 250+ stations across 17 countries, a best-selling author, and award-winning film producer who’s appeared on Shark Tank and The Kelly Clarkson Show. By 2023, he visited all 193 countries – and then created his own: The Republic of Slowjamastan. Randy travels with purpose: founding Slow Jams 4 Kids to build wells in African villages, spreading goodwill on airwaves as guests at foreign radio stations while traveling, and meeting world leaders – from the 2024 NATO Summit to the Turkmenistan delegation at the World Expo, and two visits with the Syrian Ambassador to Cuba. Every journey blends cultural diplomacy, humanitarian impact, and connection. Along the way, he works to smash stereotypes – both of Americans abroad and the countries he visits – proving that travel isn’t just about destinations, but about connection, understanding, and meaningful impact.

Kazi is breaking barriers with the 8th Weakest Passport and has travelled to 158 countries. Despite frequent immigration harassment and even detention, her determination remains unshaken. She is more than a traveller. Kazi is a changemaker breaking social barriers and inspiring thousands as a motivational speaker. Her message, “Traveling is a fun way to learn,” has reached over 70,000 people through talks at more than 700 schools, colleges, universities, and organizations. Kazi is redefining what’s possible for women from underrepresented countries – proving that with courage and purpose, even the world’s toughest challenges can be overcome.

Suhas grew up in rural Maharashtra, far from the world he dreamed of exploring. His first trip abroad in 2012, to study in the US, began a journey that has now taken him to 176 UN countries and all seven continents. Travelling on an Indian passport, Suhas has faced countless visa hurdles, long interrogations, and moments of uncertainty, yet he always found strength in the kindness of strangers. After losing his job in 2023, he chose to travel full time, exploring more than 50 new countries – from overlanding across Central Africa through Cameroon, CAR, Congo, and DRC to Angola, to experiencing remote Pacific islands and destinations seldom visited on an Indian passport, such as Bougainville, Syria, Eritrea, Somaliland, Brunei, Timor-Leste, and Comoros. Preferring authentic experiences through couchsurfing and hitchhiking, Suhas consistently helps fellow travellers with weak passports navigate borders. His journey reflects resilience, humility, and true global spirit.
Pav Mbeda 🇰🇪

Pav Mbeda 🇰🇪

Pav’s international travel journey began at university, when she joined Kenyan Rotaract Clubs on bus trips to visit sister clubs in Uganda for community service and adventures—a start that ignited nearly two decades of global exploration. Travelling on a Kenyan passport requires navigating complex visa processes, rejections, and scrutiny at borders, but she has learned to remain patient and try again when visa rules change. Balancing full-time work limits her travel time, yet it also demonstrates strong ties back home. She is driven by curiosity about people, places, food, and music. Having grown up in a different environment from most travelers, she finds that what fascinates others may feel familiar to her, while she discovers beauty in the unexpected—shaping the way she connects with the world. She hopes to inspire more Africans, particularly women, to see that the world is open to them as well.
“Travelling with one of the weakest passports in the Americas presents significant challenges—but not enough to stop a determined traveller. Mauro, from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, developed a fascination with the world after being gifted a globe as a child. The farther away a country, the more intriguing it seemed; the less he knew about it, the better.
What began as childhood curiosity evolved into a lifelong dream: to visit every country. So far, he has reached 104. His journey has not been without obstacles—visa complications, extra security checks, and countless hours and money spent obtaining the necessary documents. These experiences have taught him that simply traveling from A to B is a privilege, one that has opened his eyes to the wider world and his place within it.”
This Filipino mother and her son have travelled through 99 UN and 111 UN+ countries across six continents, demonstrating that perseverance can outweigh passport privilege. Travelling as a single mother with a child presents unique challenges, particularly when their Philippine passports are frequently scrutinized at borders. At Moldova’s Chisinau airport, they endured nearly an hour of questioning while others passed, a moment that strengthened their determination to continue. In 2025, they proudly completed every country in Europe, with Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine as their final stops. Their journeys showcase courage and curiosity, with Wyatt hiking Mt. Kinabalu in Malaysia at age 4 and Mt. Fuji in Japan at age 7, proving that adventure knows no age. Together, they inspire low-passport travelers to explore the world with heart, resilience, and determination, showing that meaningful experiences are possible regardless of privilege or circumstance.
NomadMania Awards 2023

Biggest Traveller 2025

The one and only, whose travels in the past year, in terms of both quantity (days on the road and number of trips) AND quality (difficulty and variety of destinations), render them a truly big traveller even by the standards of the NomadMania Community.

Born in Panama, Jaime started travelling at the age of 19 during a year-abroad student program in France. He subsequently went on a trip around the world on a student boat named the SS Universe, departing from Miami and visiting various countries in Africa and Asia before finishing the trip in California. During that time, he developed a passion for travel that would last a lifetime. A prominent lawyer and diplomat, a husband of 45 years and a father of three, in March 2020 he became the first Hispanic American to visit every country in the world, finishing in Nauru just as the world was shutting down. In 2024, he visited the South and North Poles, and this year he travelled to space aboard a Blue Origin capsule, thus becoming the first person in history to visit all 193 UN countries, plus the Poles and Space.

Wendy is a passionate explorer who reached a major milestone in February 2025 when she visited her final UN country, making history as the first non-Russian tourist to enter North Korea after COVID. Her insatiable wanderlust has taken her to remote corners of the world, where she’s had both extreme and awe-inspiring adventures — from meeting descendants of Fletcher Christian on Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands, to riding the iron ore train in Mauritania, participating in a Fa divination ceremony with a voodoo priest in Benin, taking a traditional Petrykivka painting class in Ukraine, watching giant turtles nest on Ascension Island, and being surrounded by curious penguins in Antarctica. Wendy has travelled to over 100 countries as a solo female traveller and has explored 317 of the 330 destinations on the Travelers’ Century Club list. With additional, exciting trips planned she continues to forge new adventures and chart bold new journeys.
Michael is currently ranked number one on NomadMania for most regions visited in 2025 – with a large margin. Angela is ranked fifth, but they aren’t letting that come between them. Together, they are We Married Adventure, and this has been a big travel year for them both: the Ballards visited five continents, 50+ countries, and completed their third circumnavigation of the globe. They travelled from the southernmost point of Africa to the northernmost point of Europe without flying. Michael drove in 136 NomadMania regions over 41 countries, and they celebrated Angela’s 50th birthday aboard the Orient Express. They share their adventures as travel correspondents for ABC television in America and are contributors to Lonely Planet, Atlas Obscura, and Google, where their photospheres have more than 35 million views. Their website, wemarriedadventure.com, has readers from 181 countries. And Angela still finds Michael funny.

Sascha, a ski instructor at 15 years old, has been on the road for 40 years, hitchhiking well over a million km in all countries but North Korea and Bhutan. He’s known as an Africa expert, having overlanded the continent and worked in Sierra Leone’s repatriation effort. He has reached almost 3000 provinces in the SISO/CHAD administrative division lists (ranked number one by a large margin), solo-climbed the highest point in over 30 countries and was imprisoned in Somalia and Bougainville. Probably the first foreigner since WWII to have walked Papua coast-to-coast Port Moresby to Lae, his current trip started in 2023. This year he hitchhiked from California to Belize, solo-climbed Central America’s highest peak and island-hopped the Aleutians on the Alaska Marine Highway. He has just left Christmas Island, Kiribati, taking a local boat to Tabuaeran. An all-rounder and a tireless travel legend, Sascha never stops.

Joao Paulo was the first Portuguese to complete a visit to every country, back in 2011. This year, he reached number 1 in the NomadMania rankings and will soon finish visiting every country a second time. He is also close to 1000 UNESCO sites, one of his passions. Among his multiple trips, there are major crossings, like the Northeast and Northwest Passage, Ross Sea, Cape to Cairo and Pacific to Atlantic crossing. He also achieved the feat of going to the North Pole, the equator and South Pole in the same year. He is the creator of the Magallanes Travel Index, a measure of travel based on the quantity and quality. He maintains a lively family life (a proud father of 6 children) and an intense professional life (he is a University Professor and Dean of Atlântico Business School), which make his exploits all the more extraordinary.

Breaking out of a remote southern Italian village, Carla’s enthusiasm for aviation led her on a lifetime journey around the world. Starting well before the digital age made travel so easily accessible today, Carla broke out of the role expected of her as an Italian woman from “mamma country” to take up the challenge of seeing the world. From hour-long delays at the ferry to Timbuktu to the time she spends volunteering in Sri Lanka, to being one of the first to fly on a Boeing 777 nonstop HKG-JFK and around the world on a single carrier, each adventure brings meaningful connections. She strongly feels that it’s all about community, bringing travellers together as creators not just of content but of their own lives. Meeting people, making connections, experiencing life are her priorities as she continues her journey.
